Student Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities

It is your responsibility to behave in a manner that is respectful towards your instructor, your fellow students, guest/parents, the horse or pony you ride, and the equipment you borrow!

At MBF we try to maintain an atmosphere that is polite and courteous to others.  Students and guests exhibiting poor sportmanship and/or rude behavior will be excused from the lesson and/or asked to leave the property.

It is also the student's responsibility to do the following:

  • Be on time for your lesson.
  • If you are going to be late or unable to attend the lesson, please notify the instructor.
  • Keep the barn aisle area clean at all times.
  • Do not leave your tack bags in the barn aisle or on the benches.
  • Your bags should be left either the viewing room (the room above the barn).
  • Proper attire is required.  When riding a properly fitted helmet, boots with hard smooth sole and a heel must be worn.
Grooming Responsibilities - Prior to Ride and After Ride
  • Please arrive in time to properly groom your horse prior to your lesson.
  • Always make sure horse/pony is properly cleaned before and after your lesson.
  • Grooming includes brushing the horse, picking hoofs, and checking tack.
  • If the horse has a blanket on, do not just drop it where you tack up - make sure it is safely placed (ideally folded or hung on a rack).
  • Do not leave manure in the stall that happens while you are tacking up.  Take the time and clean if up then.  Do not leave this for another person to do,  this is your responsibility
  • .If you are going to use the wash stall, you must pick the horses hoof and brush off any mud/dirt on the horse prior to going into the stall.
  • Mud and dirt and manure DO NOT go down the drain.
  • Clean up any manure if this should occur while you are already in the wash stall.
  • Prior to putting away your tack, at a minimum,  wipe the tack down, ideally it should be cleaned before being put away.
  • After the lesson, pick your horses hoofs, depending on the time of year - wash the horse or brush the sweat marks (around the saddle).
  • You are responsible for cleaning up any manure which occurs while you untack. Clean it up and put it in the manure buckets.
  • Return all tack to the proper rack and hook location after your lesson - bridles, girths and saddles are NOT to be left in the barn.   *Continued failure to take care of your responsibilities may result in a $25 clean up fee per incident.
Please always feel free to ask your instructor if you have any questions.

Other Notes
  • If you do not know what pony to ride for your lesson - the day of the lesson you may call or text your instructor OR sometimes you might have to wait until when you arrive for the lesson to determine which horse/pony you will ride.
  • You will likely be on the pony you rode the week before.
  • If you are new or have not been here in an extended period of time, it is important that you be flexible about which horse you will ride.

Parents:  Please note, minor children not taking lessons must be supervised by an adult while on the property at Misty Brae Farm.   Lesson students must be supervised by an adult before and after the lesson.
