Victoria Hutcheson has an extensive background encompassing over thirty years of classical, result oriented training methods. She has trained and competed successfully in three-day eventing, dressage, and show jumping at nationally recognized competitions. Additionally she has competed in all three disciplines on a variety of horses she either started herself, or which were too problematic for their previous riders.
Her education began with equitation trainer Margaret Lee. At age nine she began riding with FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale) dressage judge Major Bela Buttykay. She rode a variety of horses with Major Buttykay for the next eight years competing in recognized dressage and three-day competitions. This experience gave her an excellent foundation in classical dressage training methods. As she continued eventing, she was invited to ride at USET training sessions with Virginia Leng, and former USET three-day team coach Jack Legoff, as well as Karen Straker Dixon in the U.K. She finished her eventing career while riding with former USET three-day team anchor and ASHA president Jim Wofford. Victoria has competed in the USCTA Young Rider’s Championships, and through the Open-Intermediate level in FEI rated three-day events, and Advanced level Horse Trials.
Turning her attention to jumpers, she rode in Belgium with Gene Rocco, an internationally successful trainer with a classically based training methodology. Returning to the United States and finding herself with a string of horses that ranged from well started to problematic, she worked with a jumper trainer who had worked for a multitude of show and sales operations. He emphasized an effective, pragmatically based approach, and they worked together for three years. During that time Victoria showed a string of horses in the High Amateur-Owner, Preliminary, and Modified Jumper divisions. In addition to this she re-trained a number of problem horses for her trainer that he took on contract from other trainers or owners. Some of these horses were sold and some returned to their previous riders who were successful with them. Victoria has successfully re-schooled horses with nearly every conceivable flat work or jumping problem.
Later she trained and showed with Grand Prix jumper rider Chuck Waters, a nationally successful trainer with a very effective results oriented approach. More recently she has trained with Pato Muente another nationally successful Grand Prix jumper rider-trainer with a more classical approach.
Continuing her dressage training, Victoria has trained with Mary Flood, Lauren Sprieser, and Allison Spivey. She has earned her USDF bronze medal.
In addition to training and riding, Victoria has been teaching since 1985 in her Pony Club years. Through the United States Pony Club, Victoria received her certificate for passing the "A" level rating. The "A" rating is the highest level offered by the United States Pony Club. Since her graduation from Sweet Briar College in 1991, Victoria has been running Misty Brae Farm teaching children and adults.
